Take 2 minutes to meet Bagel, whose surgically altered barks sound like a cry for “help”… Cody, a former show dog, who struggles to breathe… Lady, given up twice after she was devocalized… and other dogs who speak for themselves and the countless dogs and cats with cut vocal cords, their punishment for the “crime” of communicating.

be_their_voiceWhy do people have this done to the animals who love and trust them? Because it’s easier for them than responsible pet selection, care and training.

Make no mistake: Landlords are NOT the problem. Irresponsible pet guardians — and the vets who enable them — are. Laws applied only to landlords do NOT protect dogs and cats from devocalization or declawing. Animals deserve laws that do.

Devocalization is always dangerous, even lethal. It’s always cruel.

And neither devocalization nor declawing ensures healthy animals won’t be euthanized or abandoned. In fact, these mutilating elective surgeries — that animals don’t elect — can increase the risk of both.
